Traditionally, tobacco has been grown without irrigation in Hungary. Irregularity of rainfall and temperature during the growing season has resulted in great year-to-year variation in yield and quality with the cropyear effect exceeding the influence of cultural practices and differences among cultivars. With irrigation increasing during the past few years, about 25 % of the total tobacco area is irrigated at present.
